Types of EV Stations
There are three main EV charging station types: Level 1 trickle chargers, Level 2 Commercial Chargers, and Level 3, commonly referred to as DCFC or DC Fast Chargers. Networked Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers are the primary choice for new installations because of the incentives provided and network software that enables owners to monitor usage and implement flexible pricing.
Level 2 chargers can add between 20 to 60 miles of range per hour (RPH) to an EV, depending on the EV charger power rating and capacity of the vehicle. Because of their cost-effectiveness and compatibility with most EVs on the market, Level 2 chargers are the most installed chargers. They are most suitable for locations where vehicles are parked for longer periods, such as workplaces, retailers, municipal sites, and multi-family complexes. Incentives are currently more accessible for Level 2 chargers versus DC Fast Chargers.
DC Fast Chargers offer significantly higher charging speeds up to 10 times faster than Level 2 chargers, adding 100 to 350 miles of range per hour (RPH) for compatible EVs. Higher upfront investment makes DC Fast Chargers a more attractive option for businesses that experience high EV demand and a need for quick charging, such as locations along transportation routes. They can be also paired with Level 2 EV chargers to provide multiple charging options for your drivers.
